Today’s 5 star restaurant secret recipe comes from the Primrose House Gift Shop and Cottage in Dayton, Virginia.  This historic Victorian gift shop offers a variety of merchandise from country to shabby chic.  Attached to the gift shop is a wonderful bed and breakfast.  One popular item served at Primose is the Scandinavian almond bars.  These almond flavored bars are topped with sliced almonds and almond icing.

New 5 Star Secret Recipe

1 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Butter or Margarine
1 Egg
1/2 tsp. Almond Extract
1 3/4 cup Flour
2 tsp. Baking Powder
1/4 tsp. Salt
1 Tbsp. Milk
1/2 cup Sliced Almonds

Icing :
1 cup Powdered Sugar
1/4 tsp. Almond Extract
1-2 Tbsp. Milk

Cream sugar and butter, beat in egg and extract.

Combine dry ingredients. Add to creamed mixture and mix well. Divide dough in fourths, form into 12×3 rectangles. Place 5″ apart on greased baking sheets. Brush with milk; sprinkle with almonds.

Bake 325 degrees for 18 to 20 minutes or until firm to touch and edges lightly browned. Cool in pan for 5 min. Cut diagonally into 1″ slices. Remove to wire rack to cool completely.

Combine icing ingredients; drizzle over bars.

    So you divide the dough into 4 portions and shape each one of those in a rectangle and cook them?? So at the end you only have 4 almond bars?

    Hi Kim. After they cook, you slice them into 1″ bars. It should make 48 bars in total.
